The 'Husky Huddle' features jottings on Owatonna sports. The wrestlers know their bracket for The Clash National Wrestling Duals coming up January 3-4 in Rochester. OHS gymnastics is ranked in the latest coaches poll.

The No. 7 rated Owatonna High School wrestling team will open up The Clash wrestling tournament against No. 3AA Washington (IL) on Friday, January 3 at the Rochester Regional Sports Center field house at RCTC at 4 pm. The Huskies are the fifth seed in their eight-team bracket.

They will face either top seed Don Bosco (IA) or Slinger (WI) in the 6 pm match. The other half of the bracket has Liberty Peoria (AZ) vs Northwest (NE) and Rapid City (SD) Central against St. Michael-Albertville as first-round match-ups.

Depending on results Friday, OHS will continue Saturday either at 9 am or 4 pm with three more duals. The top seeds in the other brackets are Waverly-Shell Rock (IA), Minisink Valley (NY), and Shakopee.

Owatonna's gymnastics squad is rated 11th in class AA in the latest coaches' poll, released this week. The Huskies average score of 138.483 is a fraction of a point behind section opponent Northfield's 138.675. Other rated Section 1AA teams are Rosemount (16th, 137.3) and Farmington (19th, 134.1). OHS is the four-time defending section champ and has finished third at the state meet the last three seasons.

The latest rankings from the Minnesota Basketball News put a couple of big hurdles in front of the Huskies for playoff time. In the girls 4A poll, Farmington is ranked second, behind No. 1 Hopkins. Big Nine teams ranked in 3A include No. 4 Red Wing, No. 5 Austin, and No. 13 Mankato West.

On the boys side, Lakeville South is 10th with Rochester Mayo rated 11th. OHS gave the Spartans a close battle on December 20. In 3A, Mankato East is third and Austin is sixth. Waseca is the No. 1 rated AA team.

Blooming Prairie is ranked sixth in class A for the girls and 13th for the boys. The Medford girls have fallen out of the AA rankings despite suffering just one loss on the season, in overtime, against No. 12-A Waterville-Elysian-Morristown.

Regarding the latest hockey poll, the only Section 1AA team ranked for the girls is Lakeville South, who is 16th. The only Big Nine team ranked is Faribault (No. 14-A). OHS graduate Cailyn McCauley coaches 9th-ranked North Wright County.

In boys hockey, Section 1AA teams Lakeville South and Lakeville North are both in the top ten. Tartan, who the Huskies recently beat, is No. 18 in class A.
