Hopes are High as Owatonna Prep Sports Season Opens
And they're off. The Owatonna High School fall sports season began Monday as the girls tennis team went to Lakeville for a triangular. The Huskies dropped a 4-3 decision to Eden Prairie and lost 6-1 to Lakeville North. Weather permitting, OHS is scheduled to play at Mankato East Tuesday.
Coach Curt Matecjek said it was some tough competition to open the season, "I thought we competed really well against Eden Prairie. Fought really hard against Lakeville North. A lot of new players that got some great matches and experience."
Freshman Emma Herzog went 2-0 on the day, playing at number-four singles. Seniors Olivia Herzog and Alex Huemoeller split their matches playing at first and second singles. Junior Olivia McDermott played three singles.
The doubles teams on Monday were seniors Lauren Thamert and Olivia Shaw, senior Ashley Schladeroff with freshman Ellery Blacker, and junior Elizabeth Roesner with Allison Wasieleski.
Owatonna Activities Director Marc Achterkirch reports that the number of students out for fall activities is great. He says there are no restrictions locally on spectator attendance. However, some other school districts may have other protocols and fans should check before they go. OHS announced an online ticketing plan for the school year.
