Unbeaten Streaks Continue for Owatonna Girls, NRHEG Boys
The Owatonna girls hockey team hasn't lost in its last nine games. NRHEG's boys basketball team still hasn't lost a game all season. Each won Tuesday night.
OHS girls hockey broke open a scoreless battle with Faribault with a three-goal third period to win 3-1. Margo Achterkirch scored twice. The Huskies are 11-0-2 in the Big Nine to lead the standings and are 7-0-2 over their last nine games. Owatonna hosts Mankato East at 7PM Thursday and has their "Skate for a Cure" night cancer fundraising night Saturday at 7:30PM when they entertain Northfield.
The NRHEG boys basketball team beat arch-rival Maple River 80-60 in Mapleton on Tuesday to improve to 16-0 on the season. Oakley Baker poured in 35 points for the Panthers, who earned their second win over the Eagles of the season. NRHEG topped Maple River 55-50 in the title game of the Bethany holiday tournament. The teams meet in New Richland on Monday, February 20, and there is a decent chance they will square off during the 2AA playoffs.
The Steele County Blades junior hockey team skated past Blaine 7-1. The Blades had just a 1-0 lead after one, but scored three times in the second and three more in the third. Soren Colstrup and Zach Bettmeng each had two goals. Oskari Valli had one goal and three assists. The Energy broke the shutout late in the third period. Steele County outshot Blaine 51-19. The Blades play in Chicago on Saturday and Sunday. Their next home game is Friday, February 3, for Federated Insurance night with the Blades, which is also "Stick it to Cancer" night.
