The Owatonna High School girls and boys basketball teams had to battle through lineup limitations but earned a sweep over Faribault in Big Nine basketball Monday, February 1. Sarah Kingland fouled out with five minutes remaining in a 61-51 victory at Nomeland Gymnasium in Faribault. The boys had a couple of starters limited due to injury but still beat the Falcons at OHS 69-43.

The Owatonna girls went on a 12-0 run in the first half after a hot start by Faribault from three-point range staked the Falcons to an 18-13 lead. After hitting five of their first seven three-point shots, Faribault was 3-for-17 for the rest of the game, according to AM 1390 KRFO stats.

Leading 27-21 at the half, the Huskies were cold shooting to lead off the second half. Faribault rallied to a 40-38 lead. OHS went on an 11-0 run and led through the rest of the game.

Lexi Mendenhall scored 20 including a pair of early three's and 6-for-8 from the free throw line. Kingland added 15. Maggie Newhouse scored 13 points off-the-bench including a pair of steal-breakaway layups in the second half. (Final: Owatonna 61, Faribault 51)

In the boys game at OHS, the Huskies forced 23 Faribault turnovers while committing just five of their own. Brayden Williams led the pack with 20. Lincoln Maher (12 points) combined with Mason Kunkel for 20 points and 11 rebounds while filling in for the injured Evan Dushek. Ty Creger chipped in 11. Payton Beyer and Nolan Burmeister did not start due to injury and played limited minutes. (Final: Owatonna 69, Faribault 43)

Owatonna (5-1) hosts Red Wing Friday with radio play-by-play on AM 1390 KRFO, now simulcasting at 94.7 FM.

The Blooming Prairie girls basketball squad suffered their first loss, falling 49-47 at Chatfield on Monday. The Awesome Blossoms led 26-15 at halftime.

NRHEG wrestling dropped a 45-30 dual to WEM/JWP Monday.

The Steele County Blades beat Rochester 3-2 at Four Seasons Centre, game two of a seven-game home stand for the junior hockey team.
