Owatonna Hockey Vaults to Top of Big Nine Standings
The Owatonna boys' hockey team sits atop the Big Nine Conference after a 6-0 victory over Red Wing Saturday. The win was worth four points in the conference standings. Andrew Munns had a goal and three assists to lead the way.
OHS opened the scoring late in the first period on Munns' shorthanded goal. Matthew DeHaan scored early in the second and the 2-0 lead lasted into the second intermission. Early in the third period Tyler Wencl scored the first of his two goals. Kenny Johnson and Landon Thurnau added goals.
Owatonna out shot Red Wing 28-22 and went 1-for-4 on the power play, while not allowing a power play goal in five penalty kills. OHS (9-7-1, 6-2-1 Big Nine) has a narrow lead atop the conference with 22 points. Rochester Century, Northfield and Mankato East all have 20 conference points. The Huskies host South St. Paul Tuesday at 7PM on KRFO AM1390.
The Owatonna girls lost to Red Wing Saturday 3-0 at the Four Seasons Centre. Future Gopher Taylor Heise scored twice for the No. 5A Wingers, who out shot the Huskies 30-14. OHS (14-5, 10-3 Big Nine) hosts Northfield Thursday at 7PM on Kat Kountry 105FM. The Raiders lead the conference race with Rochester Mayo second and the Huskies in third place.
