Owatonna's girls basketball and boys hockey teams face South Suburban teams Thursday. The girls play at Rosemount and hockey skates at Apple Valley.

The OHS girls basketball team has a new head coach. Lindsey Hugstad-Va takes over after Tricia Hoffman left the district for a different teaching job. Hugstad-Va was an assistant with the Huskies last season and was previously a head coach in Albert Lea. Owatonna returns team MVP Sydney Schultz along with starters Megan Peglow and Jenna Zeman.

Rosemount won their season opener over Park of Cottage Grove and went 16-13 last season, beating OHS during a holiday tournament in St. Cloud. Owatonna was 14-13 last season. Game time is 7PM at Rosemount High School with coverage on Kat Kountry 105FM. Owatonna opens their home schedule Saturday night at 7:30PM against Mankato East on the brand new gym floor at OHS.

The gym floor gets its first workout with the Owatonna boys Husky Havoc event Friday at 5PM. The activity features on-court contests and scrimmages for Owatonna Basketball Association teams. The varsity will have an intrasquad scrimmage and slam dunk contest. The OHS boys begin their season Friday, December 9, at home against Albert Lea.

OHS boys hockey plays at Apple Valley on Thursday at 7PM on KRFO AM 1390, the first of two meetings with the Eagles this season. The teams will also square off during the holiday tournament in Duluth. The Huskies return two of their top three scorers from last season with Tyler Wencl and Adam Rehman, as well as goalie Ryan Johnson, who had six shutouts while playing just part of the season on varsity. The Eagles went 9-16-1 last winter and are 1-1 this season. Owatonna was 15-10-2 last year, finishing third in the Big Nine.

The Huskies open their home schedule Friday against St. Francis at 7PM at the Four Seasons Centre with coverage on KRFO AM 1390. The Blue Line Club holds its annual Windsor Chop fundraising dinner Saturday at the KC Hall in Owatonna. Social time begins at 5:30PM with dinner at 6:30PM. A live and silent auction and introduction of players will be part of the evening.

The Huskies girls hockey team plays Thursday at 7PM against Mankato West at Four Seasons.
