Owatonna Beats Frazee to Split Matches at The Clash
Owatonna wrapped up the opening day of The Clash National Wrestling Duals in Rochester with a win over No. 2A Frazee 36-25. That came after a competitive loss to Vacaville, CA 37-28 in the first round. The Huskies had a bye in the second round.
The opening match against Vacaville opened at 145 pounds. The Bulldogs won the first two matches for a 10-0 lead. The Huskies won the next four matches, which included pins by Peyton Robb and Nick Staska, to grab a 19-10 advantage. Vacaville pulled even at 19-19 before back-to-back wins, including a Blake West pin, put the Huskies up 28-19. The Bulldogs won the final four bouts for the 37-28 victory.
The Huskies had a round off before facing in-state powerhouse Frazee. The match started at 170 pounds, where Owatonna's top-ranked wrestlers Robb and Cade King started the meet with pins. Staska earned a win by decision for a 15-0 lead. Frazee got pins in the next two matches to pull within 15-12. Another West pin was part of a run that pushed Owatonna's lead to 24-12.
Cameron Roberts clinched the match for Owatonna. Coach Adam Woitalla was thrilled to see the senior wrap up the match. The final was 36-25.
Owatonna will begin wrestling at 9AM Saturday. Hastings will be in their pool. The Huskies faced the Raiders at the state tournament last season. Hastings was a Section 1 opponent for the Huskies just a couple of years ago.
