NRHEG Trap Shooting Team Takes over Conference Lead

The NRHEG trap shooting team moved into first place in their conference two weeks into the season. The Panthers also have one of the top 20 shooters in the state.

The Panthers were second behind Faribault after the opening week but jumped ahead of the Falcons two weeks into the five-week season. Trap shooting is organized based on size of team roster rather than geographically. Competitions are held on a virtual basis with team scores entered electronically and compared to the other schools. The Panthers are in a conference with Faribault, Austin, Park, Wayzata, White Bear Lake, East Ridge and Simley.

Collin Christenson is in the top 20 statewide with an average of 24-out-of-25 through his first four rounds of shooting. Each week athletes shoot at two rounds of 25 clay targets. Kyle Bartz is second on the Panthers with an average of 23.5. The top 100 shooters based on regular-season average will be invited to the Minnesota State High School League tournament June 25 at the Minneapolis Gun Club in Prior Lake.

The Minnesota High School Clay Target League will host an all-comers state tournament in mid-June. The top teams there will advance to the MSHSL-sanctioned event to compete in the team championships. Medford qualified last year. The Tigers are second in their conference standings, behind Wheaton.

More than 10,000 student-athletes participate in trap shooting across Minnesota, representing 319 high schools. Twelve states offer trap shooting as a high school sport.
