Medford Hoops: Another Milestone & A Tough Loss
The eventful season continues for Medford girls basketball. The school's all-time scoring record was set earlier this season. Another player just reached a milestone. The team played an important Section 2AA game at the Kasson Mantorville Showcase Saturday, January 11, coming up short against top ten ranked Waseca.
Senior Kiley Nihart reached the 1,000 point mark during a recent home game, getting the necessary points in the closing seconds in order to celebrate in her home gym. Coach Mark Kubat reacted on the AM 1390 KRFO Coaches Show, "We make her do everything. Take the ball up. She runs our offense, gets us organized. She's awfully quick so we put her against a very good point guard for the opponent and she also rebounds like crazy."
Nihart is named an H & R Block Stat Sheet Stuffer. H & R Block Owatonna, Faribault, Lakeville. Upfront, transparent pricing...the way tax preparation should be.
"Now we have two kids on the team with 1,000-plus points. That's a pretty big accomplishment and were very proud of her," Kubat added. Senior Emma Kniefel set the school's all-time scoring mark that was held by 1962 Chuck Wobbrock. Kniefel has passed 1,700 points in her career now.
The Tigers dropped a big sectioning game at the showcase event in Kasson 68-52 to No. 6AA Waseca. Medford and the BlueJays, along with Lake Crystal-Welcome Memorial, each have ten wins as of January 13. Waseca is 4-0 against subsection teams.
Medford's only other loss came at No. 11-A Waterville-Elysian-Morristown 59-58 in overtime. The Tigers play at No. 5-A Blooming Prairie Tuesday, January 14 and are home with NRHEG on Friday, January 17.
