Huskies Claim Share of Big Nine Title
The Owatonna girls soccer team blanked Rochester John Marshall Thursday 5-0 at the Lincoln Soccer Complex to wrap up a share of the Big Nine championship for the first time since 2013. It is there seventh overall conference title. Mankato West secured a piece of the title earlier this week.
The Huskies girls soccer Twitter account, @OHSGirlsSoccer_, stated, "The girls have worked hard all season to get here. Proud of each and every player." Ezra Oien scored a hat trick on Thursday. Grace Wolfe opened the scoring and added two assists. Ela Breuer scored and Sydney Hunst had an assist at OHS improve to 11-5 overall and finished the conference season at 10-1.
Owatonna beat Mankato West early in the season but lost to Century for their lone conference setback. OHS won three straight Big Nine titles from 2003 to 2005. They added a title in 2010 and back-to-back crowns in 2012 and 2013.
Playoffs begin Tuesday, October 8. The Huskies should be at home but might settle into the fourth seed, which could mean a rematch with Northfield who Owatonna just beat 1-0 on Monday, September 30.
The OHS boys soccer team closed their regular season with a 4-0 win at John Marshall. Lane Versteeg ended a scoreless draw by converting a penalty kick with 12:27 remaining in the second half. Kaden Nelson scored on a strong kick a little over two minutes later. Sam Sampson tallied twice in the final six minutes including off a header on a corner kick.
Owatonna (7-5-4 overall, 5-2-4 Big Nine) will open the playoffs Tuesday on the road.
The season ended for the Owatonna girls tennis team with a 4-3 loss to Lakeville North in the Section 1AA quarterfinals, their third defeat against the Panthers this season. Section individual play begins Thursday, October 10.
OHS volleyball outlasted Austin Thursday night 3-2. In other volleyball, Blooming Prairie topped NRHEG 3-2 and Medford swept Bethlehem Academy 3-0.
