The Rice County Board of Commissioners unanimously passed a motion today to get rid of the south drop box at the County Government Services Building in Faribault.

A group of Rice County citizens concerned about election integrity brought the issue to the county saying some absentee ballots were deposited there in the previous election.

County Attorney John Fossum was asked to research the issue during the board work session last week…

Commissioner Galen Malecha favored removal of the drop box.

Malecha stated the drop box was placed there when the pandemic hit and the building was closed to the public.  He added removal would not take anything away from anybody.

Commissioner Jeff Docken agreed…

Commissioner Dave Miller clarified the removal would only be of the south side drop box…

There currently is no signage at the northside or social services side of the building drop box telling people not to place absentee ballots there.

The drop box on the south side was there when I walked into the meeting and was removed by the time the meeting was over.

During their work session last week commissioners and county employees said signage was apparently not read by some people.

Do they really think people won't drop a ballot into the Social Services drop box?
