Rice County Sheriff Jesse Thomas and County Attorney John Fossum held a News Conference following the formal filing of charges against a Morristown man acused of allegedly shooting and killing a fellow resident of the home.

Sheriff Thomas revealed some details included in the Criminal Complaint against Cody Vernon Kolstad, age 32 in the alleged shooting death of Brian Daniel Stoeckel, age 41.

The Sheriff was asked if they knew why the shooting occurred.

Thomas told reporters they were very familiar with Kolstad.

He was asked whether there were multiple weapons in the home.

A reporter asked Fossum about the second degree murder charge with intent.

The call came in to dispatch from Kolstad at 12:41 a.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2022.

A first degree murder charge in Minnesota requires a Grand Jury Indictment.  Kolstad was charged with Murder, second degree, With Intent-Not Premeditated.  The Felony carries a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison.

Thomas told reporters Kolstad and Stoeckel lived in Kolstad's mom's house in Morristown and that Stoeckel had been dating Kolstad's sister.
