Owatonna Girls Basketball Loses at Century; NRHEG Boys Open Playoffs with Win
As the local girls basketball regular season winds down, the boys basketball playoffs are starting to heat up. The OHS girls lost at Century 69-58.
Tied at 36-36 at the half, the Huskies were outscored 33-22 in the second half. Owatonna had just one player in double figures with Syd Schultz, who scored 15 points and grabbed about a dozen rebounds. The Kottke Jewelers diamond players of the game were Kirstin Pumper and Millie Wanous for providing a spark off the bench. Owatonna (14-11, 12-9 in the Big Nine) wraps up the regular season Thursday hosting Mankato East at 7:30PM on KRFO AM 1390.
The NRHEG boys basketball team won its 2AA South Subsection opener 58-38 over Blue Earth Area. The Panthers tangle with Waterville-Elysian-Morristown on Friday in the subsection semifinals at Mankato East High School at 7:45PM. The Bucs swept NRHEG during the regular season.
Top-seed Maple River beat Medford 63-26 and St. James Area topped Fairmont 55-50. Those two will meet at 6PM Friday night. The subsection final is Monday, February 29, at MSU-Mankato.
Boys basketball 2AAA quarterfinal action Tuesday saw Faribault whip Mankato West 73-51, top-seed Marshall slammed New Ulm 85-38, Mankato East dominated Worthington 74-40 and Waseca sailed by Hutchinson 82-50. The winners advance to Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter on Saturday for the semifinals.
