Two state individual champions, a state runner-up, and a third-place team and individual highlighted the winter sports season at Owatonna High School.

I had a great time covering Owatonna sports over the winter. It was a blast to call the action of Peyton Robb and Brandon Moen winning state wrestling championships. That was the first time in OHS history to have two first-place finishers in the same year. Tanner Cole ended his season with a third-place medal.

Owatonna gymnastics qualified for the state competition as a team for the first time in school history. I enjoyed watching the state meet and pageantry of it. Individually, Steph Kretlow took second place on the vault.

The OHS adapted floor hockey team took third place at the state tournament after consecutive years of playing in the consolation bracket.

The Huskies' girls hockey team advanced to the Section 1A championship game and ended the season ranked in the top 20. It was fun to be on air for the girls' big win at South St. Paul in a battle of ranked teams. Owatonna's boys had a winning season, finished third in the conference standings and were the state AA academic champions. Good weather made for an easy drive to Duluth to broadcast a couple of games in the holiday tournament. If only that puck that bounced off the ceiling hadn't counted as a goal for Duluth Denfeld.

Owatonna's basketball teams each had a winning season and a signature win. The OHS girls topped Big Nine champ Rochester Mayo in mid-January. The Huskies boys whipped Big Nine champ and the state's third place AAA finisher Red Wing in a late-season match-up, on the road no less. On Sunday, the OHS girls held their awards banquet. The boys will hand out their season awards April 10.

Huskies' boys swimming had a record-setting performer with senior Zach Jorgenson.

It was a solid winter season for Owatonna High School. Congratulations to the teams, coaches, parents and fans on the success and sportsmanship showed.
