You Still Need To Check The Ice
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has issued a reminder that early ice can be dangerously deceptive. The DNR reports that have been multiple reports of people and or vehicles breaking through the ice around Minnesota. Ice fatalities tend to occur more frequently during the early parts and the late parts of the season.
The DNR recommends these minimum thicknesses for new clear ice:
4 inches for ice fishing and activities on foot
5-7 inches for a snowmobile or ATV
8-12 inches for a car or small pickup
12-15 inches for a medium truck
Now if you are planning to venture out on white or snow covered ice, you should double the above measurements. You should also check out the thickness of the ice at various locations as it can vary.
The DNR also recommends carrying a cell phone, take someone along if possible and wear a life jacket when venturing on the ice.
