Trunk or Treat Becoming Good Alternative to Traditional Trick or Treating

The cars and vans lined up through the church parking lot. A short Darth Vader stalked by seeking candy. He was followed by a ghoulish homemade costume.

One television news report indicates that trunk or treating is becoming a popular alternative to its more traditional door-to-door cousin. Some consider it a safer venture than walking around neighborhoods in the dark. I also find it a little easier to decorate a car than an entire front yard. Our church held a trunk or treat event Sunday with about 30-40 kids attending.

My wife took my car monster ideas and turned them into reality. I turned up the Halloween music on my iPod and joked with the kids, most of whom I have taught in Sunday School over the years. Only a couple were too frightened to reach into the monster's mouth for a treat. I helped them by navigating around the seemingly razor-sharp incisors.

Some parents went so far as to dress up as a tall Darth Vader, Charlie Brown and a witch. I suspect many of the kids will go door-to-door in addition to Sunday's march through the church parking lot. I will have my light on to hand out more candy as well on Monday night. But trunk or treating is a nice way to add another day to a great holiday.
