The 77-year-old grandstand is gone. Demolition work on the structure at Tink Larson Baseball Field in Waseca was recently completed. The arson investigation continues.

State fire officials categorized the April 6 fire as arson and encourage anyone with information to contact the arson hotline at (800) 723-2020. A reward of to $10,000 is being offered for information that leads to arrest and conviction.

In addition to the loss of the grandstand and concession area, the fire destroyed club houses, baseball gear and expensive field grooming equipment. Some of the losses will be covered by insurance, but some items might not be. The city of Waseca website has a link set up to make donations to the rebuilding efforts.

The Waseca High School baseball team has played its first 14 games on the road. Several were "home" games for the Blue Jays in Owatonna and Waterville. A temporary backstop is being installed at Tink Larson Field and Waseca will host its first game there on Friday, May 20, against Tri-City United. It appears the playing field suffered very little damage.

Tink Larson Field is considered one of the top fields in the state. The Minnesota Baseball Coaches Association annual field of the year award is named after the Waseca field. Larson, himself was an inaugural inductee into the association's hall of fame after leading the Waseca program for 35 years. Larson has coached at all levels in Waseca. He was among the hundreds that watched the grandstand burn down in early April. The building was built in 1939 as part of the Works Progress Association program.
