Members of the Owatonna High School football team are back from their annual trip to the Notre Dame Passing Camp. They went 4-2 overall. After a 3-1 pool record in 7-on-7 scrimmages, Owatonna won their first round-of-16 game then lost to a team from the Chicago area, the same team Owatonna beat to win the Notre Dame title in 2017.

Huskies' coach Jeff Williams says it was a positive event and he saw many good things from the receivers and that quarterback Sol Havelka did a good job. He says finding defensive backs is one of the keys for the fall season.

Owatonna took several players along for the linemen challenge. Joseph Stansky, Zach Wiese, Luke Effertz and Ethan Rohman participated. Williams said due to rain, some of the games were moved to the main field at Notre Dame. The players enjoyed that, plus the opportunity to take in the campus.

Already this summer, Owatonna finished third at a 7-on-7 tournament at Mankato and won their bracket at Gustavus. They have also participated a few times in Lakeville against North, Farmington and Mounds View. They have one more appearance there this Thursday.

Players will then take a few weeks off before a team camp in late July. Owatonna began participating in 7-on-7 leagues and tournaments in 2012 at the encouragement of defensive backs coach Steve Noasconi. The objective is as much for defending the wide-open style of play as it is for getting their own offensive timing down. Williams also said the event allows for some great bonding time for the players.

The Huskies are the defending state Class 5A champions from 2017, their second title in five years.
