The Steele County Blades opened their season at home at the Four Seasons Centre in Owatonna on Friday night. They jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but lost in overtime to St. Croix Valley.

Friday, Sept. 11: St. Croix Valley 6, Steele County 5, OT

Steele County built a 4-1 lead with a pair of goals from Chase Lewis (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and tallies from Clayton Lewis (Pleasant Hill, Iowa) and Jesse Aubrecht (Farmington). St. Croix Valley pulled within 5-4 by the end of the second period. The Magicians tied the game in the third period and won it in overtime. Drew Gustavson (Winona) had the other Blades goal. St. Croix Valley outshot Steele County 43-39. Each team had a power play goal. Josh Beatty (Westminster, Colo.) played goalie for the Blades.

 

Saturday, Sept. 12: Forest Lake 8, Steele County 4

On Saturday the Blades fell behind 3-0 early at Forest Lake. Steele County clawed back to within 4-3 by the end of the first period on markers from Huss, Lewis and Gustavson. The Lakers potted the next two and Steele County countered with a goal from Wilson Enderle (Hanover) to make it 6-4 after two. Forest Lake scored twice midway through the third for the 8-4 final. Steele County went 0-for-5 on the power play. The Lakers were 0-for-3. Forest Lake outshot Steele County 33-22. Hunter Marsh (Dillon, Colo.) started in goal, but gave way to Beatty.

Steele County has a three-game weekend coming up. They play St. Croix Valley in Hudson on Friday night at 7PM. Steele County hosts Blaine on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 7PM at Four Seasons. Sunday they go to Forest Lake for a 7:30PM face off.

This is the fourth year for the Blades in Owatonna. This year they are playing in the United States Premier Hockey League.
