St. Thomas Academy Wins 3A Baseball Title with Two Hits
Talk about maximizing your opportunities. The St. Thomas Academy Cadets today captured the MSHSL Class 3A State Baseball Championship with a 1-0 win over Benilde-St. Margaret's at Target Field in Minneapolis. The Red Knights tallied 6 hits in the game and had their opportunities. They had a lead triple in the second, started innings 4,5 and 7 with hits. In the bottom of the 6th B-S-M had a runner thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
The Cadets were the #3 seed in the State Tournament and B-S-M the #5 seed. St. Thomas Academy scored their only run in the 4th inning following a one out walk to senior Duke Coburn they sent pinch runner sophomore Jason Young into the game. Young advanced to second on a ground out to third base and scored on a single to left by senior Michael Goblisch. Their other hit came in the 3rd inning.
Benilde-St. Margaret's junior pitcher Blake Mahmood took the loss and went the distance allowing 2 hits, 1 earned run with 3 walks, 9 strikeouts while facing 26 batters and throwing 105 pitches.
St. Thomas Academy senior Duke Coborn went the distance allowing 6 hits, 1 walk, 9 strikeouts while facing 31 batters and throwing 116 pitches.
The Red Knights defeated the Cadets May 20th 9-0 and finished their season 16-10.
The MSHSL Class 3A State Champion St. Thomas Academy ended their year 21-9.
