Hilltoppers of Duluth on Top of Class AA Baseball
The Marshall School of Duluth Hilltoppers avenged their only loss of the season to win the MSHSL Class AA State High School Baseball title 4-2 over Minnehaha Academy today. The game at Target Field featured a Redhawk team that had won two of the last three state titles. Minnehaha Academy defeated Marshall 5-4 during the regular season.
It looked like the Redhawks were going to win another title with a 2-0 lead going into the 6th inning, but the Hilltoppers scored a run in the sixth and 3 runs in the top of the 7th to win their first state title.
Marshall School in Duluth is a private school with an enrollment of 282 students. The baseball team had 12 seniors. Catcher Carter Sullivan delivered 3 hits in the game including a run producing triple in the top of the 7th. Shortstop Peter Hansen had 3 hits and 2 RBI in the Hilltoppers 10 hit attack.
Minnehaha Academy is a Christian school located in Minneapolis with an enrollment of 341 students. The Redhawk win over Marshall School happened on April 20th. Minnehaha had 10 seniors on their roster and the team managed 5 hits in the game with no players accomplishing more than one hit.
Senior Ben Pedersen was the winning pitcher for Marshall School going 6 and 1/3 innings, allowing 5 hits, 2 earned runs, 2 walks, 9 strikeouts. Pedersen faced 26 batters and threw 112 pitches. Senior Brett Bensen notched the save while throwing to the final two batters of the game.
Senior Brock Brumley threw the first 6 innings for Minnehaha Academy allowing 7 hits. 2 earned runs, 2 walks, 2 strikeouts while throwing 83 pitches. Senior Bennett Theisen came in the final inning and took the loss while facing 6 batters, 3 hits allowed, 2 runs and threw 18 pitches.
The Redhawks finished their season 20-5. Marshall School, Duluth 26-1 and Class 2A State Baseball Champions.
