Owatonna Girls Lacrosse Rises to Top of Conference Standings

The Owatonna girls lacrosse team came back from a trio of one-goal deficits and an apparent goal that wasn't counted to beat Rochester John Marshall 5-4 at the OHS field Monday and take over sole possession of first place in the Big Nine standings. The Huskies improve to 4-0 in the league and the Rockets drop to 3-1.

JM struck first just over seven minutes into the first half. OHS appeared to answer back about 90 seconds later but the officials ruled no goal. Several minutes later Owatonna's Lyric Broton scored her first of three goals with an assist from Adrien Breuer to even the game at 1-1 at the 13:13 mark of the first.

The Rockets jumped back ahead at 17:51 of the first half. Owatonna squared the game at 2-2 a little more than two minutes later. Skylar Eaton scored from point blank-range off a great set up by Maylynn Prokopec. The Huskies had a long offensive possession with time running out in the first half but turned over the ball. JM rushed it up the field but didn't score, leaving the game at 2-2 at halftime.

The Rockets scored 44 seconds into the second half for a 3-2 advantage. Owatonna responded about a minute later with a tic-tac-toe passing play that ended with Skyler Eaton assisting on Broton's second goal.

At 9:34 of the second half OHS took the lead for the first time on Prokopec's unassisted goal. JM hit the pipe on a couple of opportunities afterward. OHS defender Lauren Arthur made a great steal and goalie Zoe Andersen made a stellar close save with about ten minutes left.

The Huskies extended their lead to 5-3 on a sharp pass from Taylor Woltman to Broton at 16:14. JM got within a goal with just over five minutes left to end the scoring with Owatonna up 5-4. The Huskies are off until Saturday, May 4 when they play at Mayo at 12:15 pm.

The Owatonna boys lost a 9-8 game at John Marshall Monday. Mason Oland scored five times. The Huskies make up a game at Northfield Wednesday, May 1 at 6 pm.
