Maple Grove Upsets Owatonna at State Adapted Floor Hockey Tournament
Maple Grove beat the higher seeded Owatonna Huskies 7-3 in the quarterfinals of the state adapted floor hockey tournament at Bloomington Jefferson High School.
The game was a goalie duel for the first two periods, with the Crimson leading 2-0, despite both teams generating many quality scoring chances. Maple Grove extended their lead to 4-0 midway through the third period. Then the game got a little wild.
Owatonna's first goal came from junior Zach Sencer with 6:44 to go. Maple Grove made it 5-1 less than a minute later and added another with 4:40 to go. Sencer potted two more goals in a 13-second span to pull Owatonna within 6-3 with 4:06 remaining, but Owatonna's scoring ended there.
Crimson sophomore Mohammed Konneh closed the scoring with his sixth goal of the contest with 1:27 left for the 7-3 final. OHS senior goalie Nolan Engebretson made 39 saves, according to the Minnesota State High School League score sheet. His counterpart, senior Jason Robins, had 34 saves. Each net minder made numerous saves on point-blank chances.
Owatonna (10-4) plays Wayzata/Minnetonka (7-6) in the consolation bracket at 9AM Saturday at Jefferson High School. The winner advances to the consolation final. Maple Grove (9-4-1) plays North Suburban in the championship semifinals Saturday.
