Kenyon-Wanamingo Baseball Soaks in Win Against Goodhue
The rains came to end the game in the 5th inning but Goodhue finished their at bats so the Knights picked up a 10-5 win in Wanamingo Friday.
The Wildcats opened the game with a run in the first inning thanks in large part to a double by Adam Poncelat. Poncelat tatooed the ball over the head of the center fielder for K-W. He would advance to third base on a passed ball during a John Collins at bat that ended in a walk.
Poncelat scored on a Kade Altendorf at bat that ended in a fielder's choice because the shortstop flipped the ball to second base on the play to get Collins retired.
Kenyon-Wanamingo responded in the bottom of the first with five runs of their own. Lead-off hitter Trevor Steberg walked and stole second base without needing to slide.
Alex Vold was hit by a pitch, Gavin Sommer then got on base thanks to an error andthe bases were full with no outs.
The first pitch Jaden Johnson saw was smacked for a 2-run single followed by a 2-run triple off the bat of Will Van Epps.
Following strikeouts looking and swinging Colton Steberg made contact resulting in a error that scored Van Epps.
Goodhue scored three runs in the top of the second inning to show the Knights they could battle back.
Zetah opened the inning with a single. Justin Buck was retired but Zetah advanced into scoring position. Ethan Strickland hit a RBI single. Strickland was retired at second base on a ground ball hit by #9 hitter Ethan Breuer.
Matthees also reached on a fielder's choice before Poncelat stroked the ball to right field resulting in a error that allowed two runs to score and left Poncelat at third base because of a throwing error on the same play.
Steberg got out of the inning by striking out Collins looking.
Goodhue tied the game in the top of the third inning when Altendorf started the inning with a single. He advanced during back-to-back ground outs and scored on a single off the bat of Justin Buck.
Strickland followed with a single before the final out was recorded on a ground out.
In the bottom of the 4th inning #9 hitter for K-W Cal Luebke was hit by the first pitch thrown by Matthees. Steberg clubbed a single. Vold laid down a sacrifice bunt advancing Luebke and Steberg a base.
Sommer delivered a 0-1 pitch into right field for 2 RBI. He would score on a error off an infield grounder to first off the bat of Van Epps. Catcher Dillon Bartel clubbed a double placing runners at second and third base before a ground out ended the Knights 4th inning with the score 8-5 K-W.
Trevor Steberg appeared to settle into the game facing seven batters the rest of the way with just one reaching base. He struck out four of those seven batters and ended the game with 5 strikeouts.
The lone base occupant was Caleb Kurti who hit a one out single in the top of the 5th inning.
The Knights scored two runs in the bottom of the 5th inning. Colton Steberg walked to start the inning and stole second base.
#9 hitter Luebke smacked a RBI single and stole second base before Trevor Steberg gained the bases on a error that allowed Luebke to score.
Trevor Steberg went to second base on a wild pitch before Vold was hit by a pitch because Matthees slipped on the mound resulting in the umpires decided to end the game.
Our Cashwise Foods and Pharmacy of Owatonna Delivery of the Game went to Trevor Steberg not only for delivering on the mound but he was on base three of his four at bats out of the lead-off spot and scored two runs.

Goodhue 5 runs 7 hits 4 errors 5 runners left, 3 in scoring position.
The Knights are 4-2 overall and 1-1 in Gopher Conference action at the end of April.
Kenyon-Wanamingo goes to Medford on Monday with a 5:00 p.m. start.
Goodhue dropped to 0-7 with a doubleheader scheduled for Monday against Lourdes at Mayo Field.
