The University of Minnesota's depth at quarterback took a hit on Friday when sophomore Zack Annexstad hurt his foot in practice. He will be out indefinitely according to a story on the university's website.

Head coach PJ Fleck states, "Injuries are an unfortunate part of the game, and we feel terrible for Zack. He worked extremely hard in the spring and summer to put himself in position to compete for the starting job, and I know he will recover from this setback to be even stronger."

Redshirt sophomore Tanner Morgan will be the primary quarterback now as the team prepares for its season opener Thursday, August 29 against South Dakota State University at TCF Bank Stadium. Back-ups include freshmen Cole Kramer and Jacob Clark.

The exact nature of the injury wasn't immediately reported. Fleck said the injury was a non-contact incident according to Bring Me the News. Annexstad is a former Mankato West quarterback. He threw for nearly 1,300 yards last season with nine touchdowns and seven interceptions but was limited by injury in 2018.

Morgan threw for just over 1,400 yards with nine scores and six picks while leading Minnesota in their wins at Wisconsin and in the Quick Lane Bowl last season.

The Gophers will host a pair of practices open to the public on Friday, August 9 at 4:30 pm and Friday, August 16 at 4:15 pm. Each is at the Athletes Village.
