Disaster Survivor Assistance crews from FEMA will be canvassing area neighborhoods that suffered damage from September flooding. The crew members will be wearing blue FEMA shirts and have FEMA photo identification badges. Residents are encouraged to ask to see this official identification before offering personal information.

Some of the information that a DSA member may request include:

  • Your Social Security number
  • Address of the damaged primary residence
  • Description of the damage
  • Insurance information
  • Phone number and address
  • Bank account and routing numbers for direct deposit of funds.

Remember to ask for identification before sharing this information.

Another thing for flood victims to consider is whether or flood water got into your heating system, water heater or other appliances. Failure can sometimes occur weeks or even months after the event.

If you have already repaired or replaced an appliance, there's still time to see if FEMA can reimburse you for this type of expense. You have until January 30, 2017, to report damage at disaster assistance.gov or use the FEMA app or call (800) 621-3362.

A reminder that Recovery Centers have been set up at the old Cedarview Nursing Home in Owatonna and in the City of Waseca Public Safety Building.
