Aces Hoping to Beat the Odds
The Region 5C amateur baseball playoffs begin Saturday, August 3 in Cannon Falls. The Owatonna Aces are the seventh seed in the eight team tournament, leaving them as an underdog. While winning the tournament is the goal, a top three finish is all that's necessary to reach the state tournament.
The Aces begin play Saturday at 7 pm at John Burch Field against number two seed Stewartville-Racine. The second-seeded Sharks swept two games from the Aces this summer, winning 11-1 and 7-2. Stewartville-Racine won the Twin Rivers Conference with a 13-2 record. Owatonna has won six of their last seven games including taking two out of three from Pine Island in a play-in series.
The winner plays at 7 pm Sunday night while the loser plays an elimination game Sunday at 1 pm. All games Saturday and Sunday are in Cannon Falls. Fuller Field at Dartt's Park in Owatonna hosts the second weekend of the tournament August 9-11.
Red Wing is the top seed. The Aces play in the Classic Cannon Valley Conference where they face Class B teams on a regular basis. Red Wing plays number eight seed Winona Saturday morning at 10 am.
Lake City and Wanamingo square off in the 4/5 seeded game at 1 pm. Wanamingo edged Lake City 3-2 in the opening game of the season May 17. Number three seed Cannon Falls meets Austin at 4 pm Saturday.
Red Wing and Lake City played in the state amateur tournament last year. Owatonna's last tournament appearance was 2015. KDHL AM 920 will have coverage of select games in the 5C tournament.
