Second Quarter Proves Decisive in Week Two of Big Southeast Football

Owatonna used a big second quarter to give themselves plenty of breathing room in their showdown with Rochester Mayo Friday. Austin and Winona used huge second stanzas in their wins as well. There were no upsets in week two of the Big Southeast District football season. Five teams improved to 2-0, while five others dropped to 0-2. A pair of teams are 1-1.

Owatonna senior quarterback Abe Havelka found five receivers in their 36-7 victory over Rochester Mayo. The Huskies improved to 2-0 as they face their first road game of the season Friday September 15 at Austin (2-0) on KRFO AM 1390.

The Packers whipped Red Wing 43-8, overcoming flu-like illness that affected a good portion of the team, according to The Austin Daily Herald. Austin had about 200 yards passing to go with about 85 rushing yards. Leading 7-0 after the first quarter, Austin found the end zone three times in the second quarter for a 28-0 lead at halftime. The Packers' defense, which forced eight turnovers against Mayo in the first week, set up the last of those second quarter scores.

Northfield (2-0) traded touchdowns with Rochester John Marshall (0-2) most of the night before the Raiders pulled away for a 35-21 victory. JM led early in the game and again in the third quarter, as reported by the Northfield News. Lars Prestemon made some big plays for Northfield with a touchdown pass and two scores on the ground. The Raiders host winless Faribault in week three.

The Falcons were shutout for the second straight game, falling to Winona 41-0. The Winona Daily News reports the Winhawks scored 28 second quarter points to take a 35-0 lead in the halftime locker room. Winona outgained Faribault approximately 325-110 yards. The Winhawks slow start might be partially explained by the fact someone forgot to bring the wristbands that the players wear to track the plays.

Mankato West (2-0) had a big second half in their 38-12 win over Mankato East (0-2), according to the Mankato Free Press. It was West's 12th straight victory in the series, allowing them to retain the Jug trophy.

Rochester Century (1-1) scored early in the fourth quarter for a 21-16 win over New Prague (1-1) reports the Rochester Post-Bulletin. That winning touchdown came on an attempted field goal try gone wrong. The Trojans outgained the Panthers 273-218.
