Twelve finalists have been named for the annual induction into the National Toy Hall of Fame. Two or three will be selected to be added to the likes of Jacks, jump rope, cards, crayons, Monopoly and many more. You can vote for your favorites once per day through early November.

I'll make the case for sand. It's simple, it's almost everywhere and it's easy for grownups to join with their kids in making sand castles or burying their children. It can even satisfy  teenagers finicky personalities. Our family goes to the Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado most years. My son and his friends will spend an hour or more digging around.

Ball and cardboard box are already enshrined. Sand would be an appropriate partner for that wing of the hall.

I can see Matchbox cars being included, although Hot Wheels are already entered. Other nominees this year include the paper airplane and play food for pretend tea parties. Games Clue, RISK and Uno are nominated. Magic 8 Ball, My Little Pony, Transformers and PEZ round out the list.

Last year, the swing, Fisher-Price Little People and Dungeons & Dragons were added and brought the total number of toys to 63 in the hall of fame.
