They started out as one group and charted with a new name and member: The Exciters, according to history-of-rock.com.

Members of the Masterettes from New York included Brenda Reid on lead, Sylvia Williams, Lillian Walker and Carol Johnson. In the late '50s, they recorded "I Talk To My Echo," which did not chart. Penny Carter replaced Williams.

The Masterettes met with producers who renamed them The Exciters and gave them the song "Tell Him" to learn. Carter was replaced by Herb Rooney, whom the group met when he was pat of The Masters, and he added bass to the group.

Early in December 1962, The Exciters' "Tell Him" entered the charts and by late January hit No. 4. They began touring with Wilson Pickett and the Beatles.

Their follow-up singles "He's Got the Power," "Get Him," "Havin' My Fun" and "I Want You To Be My Baby," did not chart in the Top 40.

Herb Rooney and Brenda Reid married in the late '60s. In the '70s, Skip McPhee and Ronnie Pace replaced Lillian Walker and Carol Johnson. The Exciters eventually became a duo with Herb and Brenda.

They divorced in the mid-'80s. Herb went to Long Island and started a cosmetics company. The Exciters continued with Brenda and her children, one of whom became a music producer.
