The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games will be hosted August 24-September 5, 2021.

After being postponed last year due to COVID-19, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics are just days away. The Olympic Games are scheduled for July 23-August 8 with the Paralympic Games to follow August 24-September 5. Sport for athletes with an impairment has existed for more than 100 years, reads the Paralympic.org website, and the first sport clubs for the deaf were already in existence in 1888 in Berlin. Paralympic competitions were widely introduced following WWII, however, as a way to assist war veterans and civilians injured during wartime. The first Paralympic Games took place in Rome, Italy in 1960 and featured 400 athletes from 23 countries. Today, the Paralympic Games have grown to represent hundreds more athletes from dozens more countries representing 27 different summer and winter sports.
