Hampton, MN (KROC-AM News) - The State Patrol says a motorist fleeing from a Dakota County deputy was killed in a crash this morning near Hampton.

A preliminary report on the incident indicates the deputy was responding to a report of a burglary in progress at a rural home around 10:40 a.m. when he encountered a vehicle that was backed into a secluded area of the property. The State Patrol says the deputy attempted to use his squad car to prevent the driver from leaving but the man rammed into the law enforcement vehicle and drove away at a high rate of speed on a gravel road.

The deputy then pursued the vehicle, and after cresting a hill about a mile north of the property, he discovered the fleeing vehicle had rolled into a field. The man driving the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene while his 21-year-old female passenger was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. No other information about their identities has been released.

The State Patrol says investigators learned the crashed vehicle had been reported stolen in Minneapolis.
