Now more than ever is a good time to be even more vigilant about watching for bicyclists in and around Owatonna with the Bike MS: Ride Across Minnesota bringing hundreds of bikers through Owatonna Tuesday, July 17.

News out of the Twin Cities comes this week of a fatal collision between a bicyclist and a motorcycle. In this case, public safety officials say the bicyclist ran a red light on Franklin Avenue in Minneapolis and was struck by a motorcyclist according to KARE-11 TV. The adult male on the bicycle was thrown to the road and hit by a car and killed.

Even though this appears to be the fault of the man on the bicycle, it doesn't make it any less tragic. Everyone should use extra caution on the roads around Owatonna with the fundraising event rolling through town. The bikers will stop at the Steele County Fairgrounds Tuesday. The general public is invited to attend with music and food to highlight the day. The bikers are likely enjoying the cooler, less humid weather and it should be a positive, fun event for the community.

It has been a bad time on the area roads recently. Three people were killed in a head-on crash near Red Wing over the weekend. A Farmington man was airlifted to a Twin Cities hospital after a serious two-vehicle crash north of Waseca.
