Faribault Spoils Mankato West Perfect Game

Mankato West senior pitcher Tanner Shumski nearly threw a perfect game today in a 10-0 win over Faribault at Bell Field.

Falcons senior Hunter Nelson hustled out an infield single in the bottom of the 7th inning to break up the dream accomplishment.

Shumski was very efficient throwing 74 pitches, 55 for strikes. He was not overpowering striking out 5 Faribault batters and faced one batter over the minimum.

The Falcons fell behind early. Nelson started the game pitching. He went the first two innings with 3 hits allowed, 5 runs, 4 earned, 4 walks, 2 strikeouts.

The Scarlets scored 3 runs in the second, 2 runs in the third and a run in the 4th before getting 4 runs in the final inning. Mankato West finished with 8 hits, 0 errors.

Faribault had 3 errors.

Mankato West smacked two doubles and a triple in the lopsided affair. Senior Walker Britz had the triple. Seniors Riley Haley and Louis Magers clubbed the doubles.

Magers finished the day with 3 hits, Haley had 2 hits, 2 RBI.

Junior Jace Liebl ,seniors Ryan Ploog & Avery Stock connected for the other Scarlets hits.

Teagan Almendinger threw 2 innings allowing a hit , unearned run with 1 walk. Braeden Mensing went 2/3 of an inning with 2 walks. Henry Schoolmeesters got 2 and 1/3 innings of work in with 4 hits allowed, 4 unearned runs. He walked one and struck out a batter.

Faribault pitchers combined to allow 10 runs, 4 earned on 8 hits with 8 walks and 3 strikeouts.

Nelson threw 54 pitches, 25 strikes, Almendinger, 27 pitches, 13 strikes. Mensing 18 pitches, 5 strikes, Schoolmeesters, 41 pitches and 21 strikes.

The Class 3A top rated Scarlets are 5-0 and host Owatonna 6:15 p.m. Thursday.

Faribault (0-5) entertains North Branch Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. The Vikings are coached by former Falcon Steve Christensen. They are 3-3 coming off a 14-1 win over Princeton this evening.
