Faribault Football Big Plays Doom Byron
The Faribault Falcons rolled up 435 yards of total offense in a 32-14 win over the Byron Bears in the Bears Cave Friday night.
Matthew Lenway scored on a 40 yard run the first offensive series for the Falcons when they had holes blown open by their talented big line. Not a single pass was thrown on the opening drive.
Senior quarterback Hunter Nelson ran in the two point conversion.
Following a fumble record less than two minutes later Faribault scored on a perfect over the shoulder 50 yard pass to AJ Worrell. A two point pass attempt failed. The score was 14-0 Falcons.
Byron scored with 2:13 to go in the first half on a 9 yard pass from junior quarterback Nick Netzke to James Durst. The extra point kick by senior Bradley Pavon was good.
Pavon then kicked the ball to the goal line and Faribault Senior Isaac Mata returned the ball to the Falcons 36 yard line.
Faribault scored with :57 to go in the half on a 14 yard pass from Nelson to Mata. Two point run was not successful.
The Falcons had another chance to score when they recovered a fumble and got into the red zone with plenty of time left but could not punch the ball into the end zone. They failed on a 4th down and 12 pass play. The halftime score was Faribault 20 Byron 7.
The Falcons scored on the opening drive of the second half when Nelson scampered for 9 yards. A two point conversion run was unsuccesful. There were 7:28 to go in the third quarter.
Faribault's final score was a highlight reel run by Nelson for 41 yards with 4:54 left in the game. The two point pass was not sucessful.
Bears sophmore running back Adam Glynn scored with just under 3 minutes to play on a 7 yard run. Pavon nailed the extra point kick.
Glynn finished the game with 173 yards rushing on 29 carries.
The senior kicker hammered the ball into and out of the end zone for a touchback. You don't see too many high school kickers with that kind of a leg.
Netzke was 12 of 23 for 97 yards and a touchdown giving the Bears 279 yards of total offense in the loss that dropped them to 0-2 on the season following their season opening loss to Kasson-Mantorville.
Hunter Nelson was named our Malecha's Auto Body Crunch Time Faribault Player of the game while completing 8 of 19 passes for 166 yards, 2 touchdowns and a tipped ball interception. Nelson also rushed 12 times for 106 yards and two scores.
Senior running back Mathias Lenway rushed 20 times for 144 yards and a score.
Nelson and Lenway would be the first guys to tell you their success would not be possible without the play of the offensive line.
I would love to give the offensive line their own pet name I mentioned this to one of the Falcons coaches and he told me they call themselves the "hogs."
That's great but I think we can come up with something more original so make those suggestions please.
The Cashwise Foods of Owatonna Delivery of the game was the 50 yard over the shoulder connection between Nelson and Worrell in the first half.
Defensively Owen Nesburg led the team with 6.5 tackles. Elijah Hammonds had 5 tackles.
Faribault is now 2-0. They go to Stewartville next week to play against the Tigers.
