The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food safety and Inspection Service on Wednesday issued a public health alert regarding Fareway Chicken Salad. The Iowa Department of Public Health contacted officials on February 9 after an illness was reported.

The chicken salad is produced and packaged by a third party for Fareway .The product was produced between December 15, 2017 and February 13, 2018. It has been removed from Fareway shelves in all 5 states where it is sold, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota. Consumers who purchased this chicken salad are encouraged to throw it out or return it to the point of purchase.

Salmonella is a common bacterial disease that usually shows its symptoms within 12 to 36 hours of consumption but sometime can take up to 3 days to show symptoms. Symptoms which include diarrhea, headache, fever, vomiting etc may last 4 to 7 days. In some cases people develop severe symptoms that may require hospitalization.
