Don’t Do These 7 Things While Driving in Minnesota
Letting your dog drive is actually not on the following list, but I have heard you shouldn't have your dog on your lap when you are driving. State law enforcement agencies are watching for distracted drivers during an April campaign.
The Owatonna Police Department (OPD) states in a news release, "The Department of Public Safety launched Drive Smart with information to help drivers focus on driving safely to avoid tragedy for everyone on the road."
CELL PHONE USE
Minnesota became a "hands-free" state on August 1, 2019. The first offense for using your phone behind the wheel is more than $120. A second violation will set you back more than $300.
MUSIC AND OTHER VEHICLE CONTROLS
Adjust your mirrors, your seat, and have your mind focused on the task at hand. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) says distractions come from visual, manual and cognitive means.
EATING AND DRINKING
Avoid messy foods while driving. The DPS states, "In Minnesota, distracted driving contributes to an average of 46 deaths and 209 life-changing injuries a year."
READING
A couple of times I have seen a driver reading a paperback book while driving down the freeway. There are ways to listen to books while driving and be able to watch the road.
NAVIGATION
You should set your navigation or phone before leaving on your trip.
MAKE-UP, SHAVING
I have heard stories of people putting on make-up or shaving while driving. I'm not sure that I have seen someone performing those tasks. And I hope I never do.
DEALING WITH CHILDREN
I have two children who once fought and argued when we drove places. It is a dangerous distraction to referee their disagreements while driving.
