Bethlehem Academy Wins Homecoming Football Game
The Faribault Bethlehem Academy Cardinals capped off their Homecoming week with a hard fought 18-6 win over the Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights Friday night.
The two teams combined for 631 total yards of offense at Bruce Smith Field.
The Cardinals had 387 total, the Knights 244. Kenyon-Wanamingo ran 67 plays to BA's 51.
Bethlehem Academy rushed for 262 yards, passed for 125 while K-W had 177 rushing yards, 67 passing.
Knights Head Coach Jake Wieme told us on the Kenyon-Wanamingo Coaches Show on KDHL Saturday, "Give all the credit to BA. We forced 3 turnovers, had just 1, but they were able to score more points."
The Cardinals took a 6-0 lead with 3:52 to go in the first quarter when freshman quarterback Elliott Viland connected with junior receiver Charlie King for a 28 yard score. The two point conversion run attempt by Homecoming King Aiden Tobin was no good.
The Homecoming King did run for a 6 yard touchdown with 9:03 to go in the first half. His attempted run for two points was again stopped by the Knights.
With 29 seconds to go in the first half Kenyon-Wanamingo scored on a 23 yard pass from quarterback sophmore Will Van Epps to senior receiver Laden Nerison. The Knights kick attempt for an extra point was no good.
The only score of the second half occurred with 5:58 to go in the game when BA running back sophmore Derrick Sando darted for a 20 yard touchdown run. He also tried to run in for a two point conversion but was stopped by K-W.
Viland was 5 of 14 for 125 yards, 1 touchdown, 1 interception. Van Epps was 8 of 27 for 67 yards, 1 score, 1 pick.
Senior Evan Brossard rushed 14 times for 112 yards for Kenyon-Wanamingo.
Homecoming Court member Brady Strodtman tallied 112 yards on 12 carries. Derrick Sando added 81 yards on 12 carries. Oliver Linnemann had 52 yards on 4 carries and Tobin finished with 14 yards while carrying the ball 6 times.
BA Head Coach Jim Beckmann told KDHL on the Faribault Coaches Show at Bashers FariBowl Center Saturday he was particularly pleased with his team's containment of K-W running back Joshua Schmidt. The Knights leading rusher was held to 19 yards on 13 carries.
Cardinals Defensive Coordinator Jamie Kotek was also on the program and stated King, Strodtman and Sando combined for 26 total tackles, 23 solo in the contest.
Senior and Homecoming Court member Andrew Donahue collected the Bethlehem Academy interception. Kenyon-Wanamingo senior Trevor Steberg picked off a Cardinals pass.
The Knights go to Harmony to play Fillmore Central Friday, October 8, 2021 while Bethlehem Academy makes the long trip to Wabasha-Kellogg.
