Sure the state's claim to fame movie-wise seems to always be the wood-chipper flick, Fargo, but in reality the State of Hockey and 10,000 lakes is actually a very safe to live and raise a family. According to alarms.org's survey of safest cities in Minnesota, Minnesota is in the top-10 in the nation for safe states. But what city in SE Minnesota is the safest?

Lakeville comes in at #8 on the list with an average of 0.68 violent crimes per 1,000 residents. Northfield is #9 on the list with an average of 0.78 violent crimes per 1,000 residents. Other SE Minnesota communities that make the top 84 safe cities are:

Albert Lea (32), Shakopee (37), Hastings (46), Rochester (47), Owatonna (52) Faribault (55), and Austin (56).

Number one in the alarm.org ranking is Orono, a city of 19,799 perched on the northern shores of Lake Minnetonka. Its mere 3 reported violent crimes in the latest year for which data is available calculates into a hard-to-match average of 0.15 violent crimes per 1,000 residents.

The second safest community in Minnesota is Big Lake. The modestly sized town of 10,421 averaged 1.44 violent crimes and 7.29 property crimes per 1,000. Rosemount (#3) is somewhat larger at 23,717, but its 1.01 violent crimes and 8.1 property crimes per 1,000 nearly equal Big Lake’s numbers at half its size.

So do you agree with the list or was your town listed a little too low for your liking?
