Wanamingo Jacks Go Fishing Today at State Baseball
The Wanamingo Jacks open Minnesota Baseball Association Class C State Tournament action in Waconia today against the Sartell Muskies.
A Muskie is a huge fish which describes Sartell perfectly. They have a 35-2 record this season and state titles in 1992 and 2013 on their side.
Sartell has been to 18 state tournaments, 10 straight trips. They are one of the big fish in the Class C Tournament.
The Jacks are making their second appearance at the state level. First since 2015.
The Muskies play in the 15-team Lakewood League. After the team started in 1979 they were immediately successful with trips to state their first two seasons.
The 2021 Sartell team lost to Jordan 8-6 at the Jordan Tournament and in the Region 11 Tournament to Big Lake 3-0. They defeated Hutchinson last Saturday in Hamburg 5-1 in the first weekend of the State Class C Tournament.
Winning pitcher David Deminsky improved his season record to 12-0 with a 13 strikeout game.
Coming into today's contest at Lions Field in Waconia at 4:30 p.m. Deminsky has a 0.41 ERA. Opponents have hit .117 off the 6'3, 230 pound lefty.
In 87 2/3 innings Deminsky has allowed 35 hits with 139 strikeouts, 7 walks. He has pitched 7 complete games with 5 shutouts. He pitched 8 innings last weekend with no runs allowed and 5 hits against him.
The Wanamingo Jacks are 18-9 with a 10 game winning streak before losing 7-6 to Class B State Tournament bound Rochester Royals in a tune-up game for both teams on August 17th.
The Jacks top pitcher this season has been Brady Anfinson with an impressive 10-2 mark, 1.43 ERA. In 81 2/3 innings pitched, 59 hits, 65 strikeouts, 12 walks.
Sartell has a team batting average of .328. They can literally put a lineup on the field of 9 batters with over .300 batting averages.
Wanamingo is led at the plate by Eric Swiggum with a .400 batting average. It's been a monster season for the veteran with 42 hits, 14 extra base hits (5 HR, 3 triples, 6 doubles).
The Jacks have 5 players with significant at bats hitting over .300. Their team batting average is .282. Wanamingo has hit 13 home runs this season, Sartell 15 round trippers.
I will be in Waconia to call today's action on KDHL Radio, 920AM, 97.9 FM (static free) and the KDHL app (the best way to listen).
Like a Muskie, Sartell laid back in the weeds until the 6th inning in their win over Hutchinson, scoring 4 runs in that inning. Their cleanup hitter had their only stolen base in the game.
The Muskies have 64 stolen bases, Wanamingo 22 this season.
Because they won Region 5 Wanamingo will be the home team today.
Muskies are powerful fighters in the water. The Jacks definitely have their work cut out for them.
No mistakes in the field. No walks by their pitchers. Level attack swings at the plate could be the formula for success for a Wanamingo advance to their deepest state run to date.
This is an interesting read.
