USDA Extends Deadline to Apply for PLIP Pandemic Program
Livestock producers, specifically pork, chicken and turkey producers now have until October 13, 2021 to apply for the USDA's Pandemic Livestock Indemnity Program (PLIP.) The previous deadline was September 17, 2021. The original deadline was September 17, 2021. This program is for livestock producers that sustained losses during the COVID-19 pandemic because their processing plans slowed down or even shutdown.
The PLIP program will provide "assistance for those losses and the cost of depopulation and disposal of the animals. "Livestock and poultry producers were among the hardest hit by the pandemic," said Farm Service Agency (FSA) Administrator Zach Ducheneaux. "We want to ensure that all eligible producers have the opportunity to apply for this critical assistance." The assistance is for livestock losses from March 1, 2020 through December 26, 2020.
PLIP payments will be reduced if livestock producers received EQUIP or CFAP payments on the same inventory of swine that was depopulated. It did not seem like livestock producers in southeastern and southern Minnesota were affected as much as some other areas. However, if you think you may qualify for any additional assistance it sure would be worth your time to call your FSA office at your local USDA Government Services Center.
