The halfway point of the high school football season hits on this final weekend of September. Wonderful weather should greet players, fans and cheerleaders. Top area matchups include a top-rated, unbeaten team renewing their rivalry with a longtime conference foe. Another squad is seeking their first win of the season on homecoming, but will be challenged by a top-ten rated team. And how high will the scoreboard go in a showdown of teams that seem to light-it-up each time they play.

Blooming Prairie (3-0, No. 1AA) hosts Waterville-Elysian-Morristown (2-1) in an old Gopher Conference battle. BP is riding a 21-game winning streak, the longest active run in the state. Radio coverage will be heard on Kat Kountry 105 FM and the Kat Kountry 105 FM app. Kickoff is 7 pm Friday night.

Medford (0-3) celebrates homecoming with a tough task at hand. Gibbon-Fairfax-Wintrhop (3-0, No. 6A) comes to town. NRHEG (2-1) goes to St. Clair High School to face St. Clair/Mankato Loyola (2-1). Triton (2-1, receiving votes in the AA poll) hosts Pine Island (1-2). Each of these games is Friday.

Owatonna (1-2) hosts Austin (0-3) Saturday, September 25 at 1 pm with the broadcast on AM 1390 KRFO / 94.7 FM and the KRFO app. The teams haven't played since 2018 when the Huskies clubbed the Packers 63-27. Owatonna has scored 60 points or more in three straight meetings. But Austin has not gone down quietly.

  • 2018 season: Owatonna 63-27
  • 2017 season: Owatonna 70-36 and 62-41(section playoffs)
  • 2016 season: Owatonna 49-18 and 58-0 (section playoffs)
  • 2015 season: Owatonna 77-41....yes. 77-41!

OHS has won 21 games in a row over Austin. The last Packer win was 12-10 during the 1998 regular season. Owatonna returned the favor 21-16 in one of the most amazing comebacks in Owatonna football history, rallying from down two scores late in the fourth quarter. The Huskies went on to play in the Prep Bowl that year finishing as runner-up. Owatonna holds the overall lead in the series, 54-43-7.
