It might only be June, but two big retails chains based here in Minnesota have already said they won't be open on Thanksgiving this year.

Thanksgiving is usually all about getting together with family and friends and giving thanks for all things we sometimes take for granted. Well, it's USUALLY about getting together with family and friends, that is-- though as the pandemic spiked last year, many of us in Minnesota just stayed home.

Of course, in recent years, Thanksgiving has also been the start of the holiday shopping frenzy, as many retailers got a jump on those early Black Friday sales by opening on Thanksgiving Day. Again, though, like just about every other aspect of our lives, the pandemic last year changed things, with many retailers offering holiday deals online instead, as they tried to limit the number of shoppers in their stores at the same time.

And it looks like that trend might be continuing this year, seeing as some of the biggest retails in the country, including two based here in Minnesota, are keeping their doors closed on Thanksgiving Day 2021.

USA Today reports that Best Buy, based in Bloomington, is the latest retail chain to announce that they will be closed on Thanksgiving. They join their fellow Minnesota-based retailer, Target, in announcing they won't be open on Turkey Day this year. Walmart has also said they will continue the trend started in 2020 by staying closed on Thanksgiving Day, as well.

"This year, we’ll have even more ways for customers to easily and conveniently get their holiday shopping done, over the Black Friday weekend and throughout the entire holiday season," Best Buy spokesperson Keegan Shoutz said in the USA Today story.

I was never brave enough to head out shopping on either Thanksgiving Day or Black Friday, so to me, this seems like a good idea. Plus, it gives their employees the full holiday to enjoy, instead of having to go to work. Chalk up another change courtesy of the pandemic! Of course, the pandemic also caused many stores to simply close for good too. Keep scrolling to check out some iconic stores that aren't around anymore-- on Thanksgiving or any other day.
