Homecoming week at Owatonna began with coronation Monday night. Maria Golberg and Austin Abbas were crowned queen and king to reign over the week.

Maria is the daughter of Scott and Shelly Golberg. Austin is the son of Jerry and Danielle Abbas. The other finalists were Hannah Cochlin, Zoe Kienholz, Grace McClintock, Emma Smith, Lucas Arndt, Joe Belina, Ryan Guenther and Tyler Kain.

Coronation included a fall sports updates from captains of the girls tennis, girls cross country, volleyball and boys soccer teams.

Owatonna football coach Jeff Williams reflected on how things haven't changed that much over his time in Owatonna. "In the 20 years I've been standing on this stage and the 27 years I've been in this community not much has changed. The things that we were really good at and the the things that we really valued a generation ago, are still really, really important parts of our community. They're still things we're really, really good at. And I guess my final words to you are don't take that for granted."

Williams highlighted National Honor Society's community involvement, the drama department, the success of the Magnet newspaper and website, the OHS Carolers program and the band among others.

Tess Heyer, 2013 homecoming queen, spoke to the crowd about the way things have changed for her since graduating. She attends school at Bemidji State. Andrew Stelter, 2013 king, addressed the audience via a recorded video due to his schedule at the University of Minnesota. He emphasized several points that included enjoy your time living at home and listen to your parents.

Homecoming week activities include powder puff football Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 8PM on the OHS stadium field. Admission is $2 or a food donation to the Steele County food shelf. Concessions will be available. The parade is Friday at 1:30PM. It will be carried live on KRFO AM 1390 with OHS principal Mark Randall joining KRFO's Roy Koenig.

Monday night's coronation will be rebroadcast Friday afternoon around 5:45PM as a lead-in to the broadcast of the homecoming game against New Prague.

The semifinalists for homecoming were Elena Bueltel, Karissa Hilstad, Steph Kretlow, Carli Langeland, Brooke Otterson, Jenna Rhoades, Rebecca Sedivy, Alex Emanuelson, Mark Hanson, Eli Havelka, Alec Holcomb, Sam Hylle, Ghulam Mohammad and Blake Westphal.

Hilstad and Hylle acted at the emcees Monday night. The homecoming theme is "OHS Road Trip."
