Owatonna Girls Tennis Reaches Section Final Four; Soccer Teams Win
The Owatonna girls tennis team has advanced to the Section 1AA semifinal again. OHS beat Hastings 5-2 Thursday at the West Hills Tennis and Fitness Center and will play Northfield Tuesday in Rochester. The sixth-seeded Raiders upset third seed Lakeville North 4-3.
The Huskies, the second seed, edged Northfield 4-3 early in the season. No. 1 Rochester Mayo and No. 3 Century meet in the other semifinal. The finals are also Tuesday. Mayo has won 20 of the last 21 section titles, beating Owatonna in each of the last four years in the finals.
It has been announced the Owatonna coach Curt Matejcek is the Big Nine coach of the year. The Huskies finished second in the standings behind Mayo.
Owatonna's soccer teams closed the regular season with victories over Mankato East Thursday. The girls won 7-0 at Lincoln behind a hat trick from Jordan Whalen and the first varsity goal for Ela Bruer. The OHS boys blanked East in Mankato 4-0. Nate Smith broke the single-season school record for goals scored.
In area volleyball, WEM rallied from down two sets to edge Medford 3-2, Blooming Prairie outlasted Goodhue 3-2 and Lake City beat Triton 3-1. Big Nine leader Northfield downed Winona and Mayo swept Austin.
