The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) announced today in addition to cancelling the girls and boys state high school basketball tournaments they are imposing some limitations on spring sports and activities.

Effective immediately from now until April 6, 2020 a news release from MSHSL states:

  • Participation in spring sports and activities is limited to practice and tryouts only
  • Scrimmages, competitions, practices, training sessions or participation with other member school programs is not allowed.

The news release goes on to specify:  "School administration at their discretion, may place more restrictive limitations on practice and participation.  As COVID-19 is rapidly evolving, the MSHSL will continue to monitor the situation and make adjustments when necessary."

I spoke earlier today with a couple of area Athletic Directors anticipating there might be an announcement concerning spring sports.  They indicated they had not heard such talk but also said they would not be surprised.  They hoped the spring seasons would not be cancelled.  That obviously could still happen.

In China where the Coronavirus (COVID-19) is believed to have originated it took about a month for the cases to calm down.

We do not have the massive population they have but that does not mean we won't be hit harder because we are working in uncharted territory.

Also with the warmer weather maybe the virus will naturally be knocked down just as the flu virus is when warmer weather is experienced each spring.
