Mall Of America To Host First Pro Wrestling Event since 1995
The Mall of America in Minnesota has not hosted a pro wrestling event since the premiere of WCW Monday Nitro back in 1995. This fall, they will host a wrestling event once again.
It has been a long 27 years since pro wrestling was hosted at the largest shopping mall in the United States. It also isn't the first time the mall has been in movies and tv. It apparently had a reference in the hit show 'How I Met Your Mother', it was also featured in 'D2' and 'D3' of 'The Mighty Ducks' franchise. Who can forget the classic Arnold Schwarzenegger family movie 'Jingle All The Way'? Check out the trailer of the latter below:
The 90's were lit for filming at the MOA, even Mary-Kate & Ashley Olson did some filming there. For those that don't know, 27 years ago was the debut of WCW 'Monday Nitro' and they were competing with WWE 'Monday Night Raw' which was a huge deal at the time.
Say what you want about wrestling, I was obsessed with it growing up. I remember when WCW came to the DECC, I went with my mom and my best friend. We got a picture with Sid Vicious who stands 6' 9" tall. I absolutely love that Sid took a few seconds to take a quick pic with us young kids. The giant towered over us, but it was a moment I would never forget.
F1rst Wrestling will be coming to the MOA this fall. You can check out their press release here. The event is Saturday, September 10 and will be held in the Huntington Bank Rotunda. Tickets will go on sale Friday, June 24 at 10 am. Looks like the event will start around 7 pm.
Check out the main event from WCW Monday Nitro that night, pitting the champion Hulk Hogan against Big Bubba (known as Big Bossman in the WWE). Some other well known superstars make an appearance at the end of the match as well:
