Lakeville South Races Past Owatonna in Boys Basketball Playoffs
Lakeville South beat Owatonna 87-57 in an uptempo Section 1AAAA quarterfinal boys basketball game Wednesday night.
The Cougars raced up the floor taking quick shots, yet still shot nearly 50 percent. They drilled nine three-pointers. Jack Sorenson scored 21 of his 26 points in the first half as South built a 48-30 lead at the break. Shae Mitchell had several dunks and was the recipient of a few alley-oop passes. The Cougars forced numerous turnovers and held Owatonna to around 35 percent shooting on the night.
South went on a quick 9-0 run to start the second half for a 57-30 lead. OHS responded with a 10-0 burst. After trading a few baskets, South put together another 9-0 run to go ahead 72-44.
Dalton Kubista led the Huskies with 23, including four treys. Andrew Jackson added 11. Six seniors on the OHS roster include Jadyn Gunderson, Hunter Atkinson, Jay Sullivan, Jacob Neuharth, Ethan Dekam and Eden Mrozek. The Huskies end the season with an 18-9 record overall and 16-6 for a third-place finish in the Big Nine Conference.
South advances to the section semifinals and plays four-time defending section Lakeville North on Saturday night. The Panthers beat Rochester Century 87-44. Big Nine champ Rochester John Marshall beat Farmington 61-50 in a game that was close most of the way. Matthew Hurt scored 30 for the Rockets. JM, the No. 3 seed, will face No. 2 New Prague on Saturday after the Trojans beat Rochester Mayo 70-56.
