Keep Track of Owatonna, Medford and Area Wrestlers at State

Check back here for the results of the Owatonna, Medford, Westfield and NRHEG wrestlers at the state meet at the Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul. Eleven local wrestlers will have their matches covered on KRFO AM 1390 and the KRFO app.

Owatonna:

Kanin Hable (fr, 23-12 record entering state tournament) 120 pounds. A bracket with five returning place-winners from 2019. This is Hable's first appearance at state.

Round One: Jared Spohn (jr, 34-3 from Sauk Rapids-Rice defeated Hable, pin, 4:58
Hable did not advance to the consolation round.

Landen Johnson (fr, 39-8) 138 pounds. Johnson is back at state after debuting in 2017 as a seventh-grader but missing last season.

Round One: Johnson defeated Ryan Luthi (jr, 33-14 from Moorhead) 12-1
Round Two: Hunter Lyden (fr, 47-3 from East Ridge) defeated Johnson 10-4.
Consolation: Johnson won 17-1 over Gabe Schumacher (so, 19-11 from Minnetonka)
Consolation: Johnson defeated Kyle Patnode (sr, 41-7 from Brainerd) by pin, 4:23.
Consolation: Trey Kruse(Jr, 40-5 from Stillwater Area) defeated Johnson 7-0.
Fifth Place Match: Gavin Peterson (jr, 44-7, Maple Grove) defeated Johnson 4-2 (ot)
Johnson (42-11) finishes sixth in his second time at state.

Cade King (sr, 40-4) 182 pounds. King is the defending state champ at 182. All four losses have come against Zach Glazier of Albert Lea, who won the 170 pound title a year ago and is the top seed at 182 this year.

Round One: King tech fall victory 17-2 over Zach Young (sr, 30-14)
Round Two: King win by pin in 1:04 over Jacob Meissner (fr, 35-4 from Osseo)
Semifinals: King defeated Josh Piechowski (jr, 39-8 from Stillwater Area) 13-2.
Championship: Zach Glazier (sr, 46-0, Albert Lea) defeated King 1-0.
Kings (43-5) ends his career as a four-time place-winner and three-time finalist with one state title.

Nick Staska (sr. 29-11) 220 pounds. Staksa just missed placing at state in 2018. This is his second trip to the state meet.

Round One: Staska won by pin, 5:15 over Lafayette Bade (sr, 29-7 from Elk River)
Round Two: Cole Fibranz (sr, 40-1 from Sartell-St. Stephen) defeated Staska 8-0.
Consolation: Staska defeated Charles Dressel (sr, 29-13 from Mounds View) 4-2.
Consolation: Staska defeated Jagger Schack (so, 36-6 from Osseo).3-1 in overtime.
Consolation: Andrew Reigstad (so, 33-3, Osseo) defeated Staska 5-0
Fifth Place Match: Staska defeated Tommy Johnson (so, 43-8, Shakopee)
Staska (33-13) was a two-time state participant for his career.

Medford:

Alex Helgeson (8th, 24-10) 106 pounds. This is Helgeson's first appearance at the state meet.

Round One: vs Michael Majerus (jr, 37-9 from ZM) defeated Helgeson 9-1.
Consolation: Ethan Hendrickson (fr, 36-4 from UNC) defeated Helgeson 15-5.
Helgeson (24-12) was eliminated.

Charley Elwood (8th, 31-2) 113 pounds. Elwood placed second at 106 in 2018.

Round One: Elwood win by pin at 2:25 over Jace Olson (jr, 2014 from Border West)
Round Two: Elwood defeated Easton McCrory (fr, 30-8 from Minnewaska Area) 3-1.
Semifinals: Elwood defeated Zach Brown (so. 38-1 from Crookston).9-5.
Championship: Elwood defeated Derek Steele (so, 44-4, Sibley East) 4-0.
Elwood (35-2) becomes Medford's 11th state champion.

Willie VonRuden (jr, 29-1) 145 pounds. VonRuden finished third at 138 in 2018.

Round One: VonRuden win by pin in :34 over Jared Carlson (sr, 32-7 from KMS)
Round Two: VonRuden defeated Zach Spinks (sr, 26-9 from Windom/Mt. Lake) 9-1.
Semifinals:defeated Owen Novacek (sr, 41-3 from Badger/GB-MR).6-4
Championship: Kyle Cavanaugh (Sr, 39-0, Caledonia/Houston) defeated VonRuden 5-4.
VonRuden (32-2) is a two-time finalist at state.

Westfield Razorbacks (Blooming Prairie/Hayfield coop):

Colton Krell (jr, 34-3) 170 pounds. Krell was second at 160 pounds in 2018.

Round One:Krell with 9-1 major decision over Alex Lange (sr, 39-7 from Holdingford)
Round Two: Krell defeated Brett Graham (jr, 33-11 from Frazee) 9-3.
Semifinals:Tyson Meyer (so, 35-0 from Minnewaska Area) defeated Krell 7-2.
Consolation: Krell defeated Shawn Buysse (sr, 29-10, Minneota) 10-4
3rd Place Match: Krell (38-4) defeated Graham 9-3.

Dylan Nirk (sr, 27-9) 220 pounds. Nirk is ranked third in the state.

Round One: Dylan Jergenson (jr, 31-5 from Minnewaska Area) defeated Nirk 3-2.
Consolation: Alex Chidester (sr, 34-3 from Oglivie) defeated Nirk 5-3.
Nirk (27-11) gets eliminated.

NRHEG:

Tyler Jacobson (sr, 25-12) 170 pounds

First Round: Jace Paplow (sr, 42-2 from Tracy/Milroy/Balaton/WWG) defeated Jacobson 5-0.
Jacobson (25-13) did not qualify for the consolation bracket.

Quinten Arndt (sr, 29-9) 285 pounds

Round One: vs Tanner Berghuis (jr, 40-1 from ACGC) defeated Arndt 6-2
Consolation: Cian Buehler (so, 29-9 from Ottertail Central) won 3-0 over Arndt.
