In the midst of some winter weather, Minnesota Severe Weather Awareness Week starts today.  KDHL will be providing you with a informative program today about what to do during a severe weather event.  The half hour program will be live at 9:30 a.m. and then replayed Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. for those who can't listen in the morning.

If those times don't work for you the program will be available on our website www.kdhlradio.com.  I have invited Rice County Sheriff Troy Dunn, Rice County Emergency Management Director Jennifer Hauer-Schmitz, Assistant Director John Rowan and Faribault City Emergency Management Director Dusty Dienst to join us.

I have done a program like this since my days in Nebraska when I worked in North Platte where tornadoes are very common during the summer.  Or at least they were in the early to mid-80's.

We will go over information about the five items the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) wants to highlight each day this week.

  • Monday-Alerts and Warnings
  • Tuesday-Severe Weather, Lightning and Hail
  • Wednesday-Floods
  • Thursday-Tornadoes (with statewide tornado drills)
  • Friday- Extreme Heat

In the past 10 years, 55 people have died and dozens more have been injured as a result of weather-related events (not including auto accidents caused by severe weather).

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety says the most important events during Severe Weather Awareness Week are the two statewide tornado drills scheduled for Thursday, April 12 at 1:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m.

National Weather Service Data tells us an average of 40 tornadoes are experienced in Minnesota each year.  A record was set in 2010 with 104 tornadoes reported across the state.

Please take the opportunity this week to review your business and/or home emergency procedures in the event of severe weather.  If you don't have a plan then please develop one.   The lives you save could be loved ones.  In these emergencies time is of the essence.

Please take this seriously.

The top severe weather hazards in Minnesota are:

  1. Severe Storms, Hail, Lightning
  2. Floods
  3. Tornadoes
  4. Extreme Heat

You want to be ready so please tune in Monday 9:30 a.m. or 7:00 p.m. or sometime during Minnesota Severe Weather Awareness Week April 9-13. 2018.
